BUILT arund popular songs from the trenches, this is a satirical, funny, yet deeply-moving exploration of the most terrible of all wars.

Around 50 years after the outbreak of the First World War, Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop produced a chronicle of the period, told through the actual songs, jokes, newspaper articles and documents of the period. It was an ensemble piece with the writer, director and actors working together closely to researching and develop the piece. When first performed in 1963 it met with universal acclaim and was later turned into a very successful film. Fifty years on, to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War, Tichfield Festival Theatre will recreate this groundbreaking piece with its extraordinary combination of satire, humour and deep pathos.
