Bugsy Malone
Stage One Youth Theatre Group
Ferneham Hall, Fareham
As their autumn production,Stage One have presented an enjoyable version of this popular musical. Played very much as an ensemble piece, this enabled the whole company to participate in numbers in a way I have not seen previously.
The orchestra, under the guidance of Musical Director Dennis Brombley, produced a lush and rich sound. It was well sung and there were some nicely choreographed dance numbers.
The show has lots of short scenes which require a great many scene changes, something that can impinge on the action at times. Director Jacqui Ivemy showed a steady hand, keeping the action moving along nicely and making good use of the auditorium space.
At the core of the action were some strong performers. Adam Brombley showed great charisma and stage presence as Bugsy Malone. He was well matched by Sian Samways who made a charming and lively Blousey Brown.
