REVIEW: The Wonderful World of Dissocia

Young Theatre Royal

Theatre Royal, Winchester

ANTHONY Neilson's work takes us on a journey with Lisa Jones in search of the hour that she has lost. Descending like Alice into her own surreal wonderland, Lisa embarked on a series of disjointed, often highly amusing adventures populated with an array of fascinating characters such as the in-security guards. But with this wonderland menaced by a villain Black Dog King (depression) the underlying issue of mental health also becomes apparent.

Crisply directed by Ruby Carr, the production was simply yet beautifully staged, with great use of lighting and effects. The contrast of the vivid colour and dynamism of the world of Dissocia with the dullness of Lisa's real world was done very well.

The small ensemble cast tackled this challenging material with great dedication. On stage throughout, Freya (Lisa) was utterly mesmerising, perfectly capturing her manic energy, intelligence, humour and vulnerability.
