CURTAIN CALL REVIEW
‘CALAMITY JANE’
South Downe Musical Society
Ferneham Hall
SEASONED performer Jane Pegler’s first directorial role displayed no sign of her inexperience, such was the overall quality of this production. With a well-dressed, excellently lit set, effective backdrop scenery and an ensemble that harmonised perfectly, the leading players needed to hit the spot also. They did. Kimberley Harvey was a feisty Calam, acting believably and singing beautifully, never more so than on a stunning version of Secret Love. Company debutante Caitlin Hoddle ran her close as Katie Brown and their duet on A Woman’s Touch was a delight. Danny Owen is another star performer and his Higher Than A Hawk solo was his high-spot in a solid characterisation as Bill Hickock. Nick Williams (Lt Danny Gilmartin) and Alan Jenkins (Francis Fryer) both gave impressive performances and mention must also go to the always excellent Helen Stoddart for her fleeting appearance as Adelaide Adams. Alan Pring’s orchestra matched the quality on-stage perfectly.
