IT'S Romsey's only thatched roof pub and it's a welcoming community hub with great local beers and food.

Dating back to the 17th Century, The Old House at Home with its open fires in winter and pretty three tiered garden is just a two minute stroll from the town centre.

It's popular with locals, visitors and foodies alike.

Owners Anita Charman and Rob Gentles have been at the helm for a tricky two years.

They told the Daily Echo: "We launched a takeaway and delivery service when Covid hit to help support our customers and the people of Romsey.

"We are extremely proud to have supported, the old, young, sick and vulnerable people in such uncertain times."

More events will return including jazz in the garden, Motown / swing and soul afternoons, regular barbecues and special evenings like Pie, Mash and Liquor, Burns Night and other patriotic events.

The pub retains its old world grace and charm and has a welcoming atmosphere.

Daily Echo:

The Old House boasts a pretty three tiered garden with a patio and heated areas, as well as easy listening music playing in the background.

The gastro pub menu, all cooked fresh using local ingredients and suppliers, includes fish and chips, steak, ham, egg and chips and burgers.

During its 17th century beginnings, The Old House was owned by the Smith family and was a brew house. Retrieved account books from the time showing huge flour purchases suggest Mr Smith also baked bread there. The chimney stack where this would have taken place remains a feature of the pub. The pub was owned by Hammertons and Charingtons breweries and had a nickname of the Spotted Cow after a lost cow was found in the bar!

As far as Anita and Rob are concerned, the best thing about running the pub is creating a community hub and getting to know and see their customers regularly, and building relationships with them. Their feet do ache after a busy shift though!
