A school has said its staff treated two stowaways with compassion after they were found on a coach when it returned with pupils from a trip to France.

Parents were in shock after the two men, believed to be in their early 20s, were found among the luggage when the coach arrived at Hounsdown School in Totton on Saturday after a three-day school trip.

Police said they attended the incident just before 5.15pm, but no arrests were made.

A Home Office spokesperson declined to confirm whether the two men were detained.

Now Hounsdown School has said the 'possible illegal immigrants' were 'treated with compassion by staff and parents throughout'.

They said any investigation into the matters rests with the Home Office and that it is working with other agencies as required.

Hampshire police confirmed they attended but no arrests were made.

A Home Office spokesperson did not confirm whether the two men had been detained, adding: “The Government works closely with law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal migration in all its forms.

“Our Illegal Migration Act will mean that people arriving in the UK illegally are detained and promptly removed to their country of origin or a safe third country."
