SAINTS – THE WORST WINTER TRANSFER WINDOW SIGNINGS OF ALL TIME.

The winter transfer window quite often results in some spectacularly bad transfers.

Here are some of the deals that just didn’t work out for Saints...

Vegard Forren.

Will go down as one of the most bizarre signings in the club’s history.

The Norwegian international defender joined Saints from Molde for £4m in January 2013, his arrival announced on the same day Nigel Adkins was sacked and Mauricio Pochettino appointed.

But he returned to Molde the following July for an undisclosed fee having failed to make a single first team appearance.

Stephen O’Halloran.

The Irishman arrived on loan in January 2008, but only made one Championship appearance – and that was as a sub.

He came on in the 65th minute of a 1-0 home defeat to Norwich.

Is currently playing in the Conference North for Stockport.

Iago Falque.

The Spanish midfielder made just one start after being brought in by Nigel Adkins in January 2012 on loan from Tottenham.

That was in a 2-0 St Mary’s loss to Leicester City, where Falque was substituted and never seen again.

He is currently playing regularly in Serie A for Genoa.

Dany N’Guessan.

Nigel Adkins brought him in on loan from Leicester in the January 2011 transfer window.

The striker made six League One appearances in his time at St Mary’s, but failed to score.

Tadanari Lee.

The Japanese striker arrived in a blaze of publicity in January 2012 with talk of him taking the Saints brand global.

However, it never happened for the man who scored the winning goal in the 2011 Asian Cup final.

A mixture of injuries and an inability to claim a regular place for himself saw him return to his native country in the January 2014 window to join Urawa Red Diamonds.

Only made seven league appearances for Saints, three of them off the bench.

Jonathan Forte.

Another Adkins signing, also arriving in the January 2011 window from the manager’s former club Scunthorpe.

Found chances very hard to come by during his time at St Mary’s.

Did score two vital goals against MK Dons in League One in April 2011, as Saints came from 0-2 down to win 3-2, but hardly played after that.

Is enjoying a good season at League 1 club Oldham, with 14 goals in 19 starts plus two off the bench so far.

Lee Molyneux.

Signed on a free from Everton in the January 2009 window, the full back was sent off on his fourth appearance against Swansea at St Mary’s.

He never played for the club again.

Steven Crainey.

Signed from Celtic in the January 2004 window by Gordon Strachan to improve his options at left back.

But Strachan was gone within weeks and Crainey had left before the start of the next season, moving to Leeds.

He featured in only five games for Saints, none of which they won.

Signed for League 1 club Fleetwood Town last summer, and he has been a regular so far.
