SAINTS – THE BEST WINTER TRANSFER WINDOW SIGNINGS OF ALL TIME.

Will new man Filip Djuricic go down in St Mary’s folklore alongside the following, who were all signed during the winter transfer window?

Jose Fonte.

The Portuguese centre half has been an excellent signing for Saints.

When he joined in January 2010, then boss Alan Pardew identified Fonte as a player that could go through the leagues with Saints and represent the club in the Premier League.

Fonte dropped down a division to join Saints, who were then in the third tier, and hasn’t looked back.

Signed a new contract last summer and was rewarded with the captaincy by Ronald Koeman.

Daily Echo: Billy Sharp

Billy Sharp.

A very short term hit for Saints following his arrival in January 2012.

Was brought in from Doncaster for £1.7m to deliver the goals to get Saints promoted from the Championship.

He did exactly what was asked of him, bagging nine in 15 matches.

However, he just wasn’t fancied at Premier League level and was shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest, Reading and former club Doncaster prior to joining Leeds last summer.

Scored only his second goal in 20 appearances for the Yorkshire club last weekend, coming off the bench to grab a last minute derby winner at Huddersfield.

Daily Echo: Marek Saganowski

Marek Saganowski.

The Polish international belted 10 goals in 11 starts, plus two off the bench, to help Saints into the Championship play-offs in 2006/07 after arriving on loan in January 2007.

Saganowski was subsequently signed permanently, only for the goals to dry up.

After his great start at the club, once he was a permanent signing he could only score nine goals in 55 outings – 31 of which were starts.

Jason Puncheon.

Was somewhat of an enigma at Saints.

Signed by Alan Pardew in January 2010 for £250,000 from Plymouth, Puncheon fell out of favour under Nigel Adkins to start with and was loaned to Millwall, Blackpool and QPR.

At times it seemed his St Mary’s career was over, but Puncheon was to emerge as a regular for Saints in the club’s Premier League return campaign of 2012/13.

It was something of a surprise when Mauricio Pochettino allowed Puncheon to return to his south London roots in the summer of 2013 and join Crystal Palace on loan.

The move was eventually made permanent, with the winger now reunited with the manager who signed him for Saints five years ago.

Daily Echo:

Alexander Ostlund.

Bit of a mixed bag at Saints following his arrival from Feyenoord for £400,000 in January 2006.

Became an iconic character because of his long hair and beard, having joined with a bit of a fanfare and expectation on his shoulders.

Didn’t let anybody down when he played, but that wasn’t too often.

In two and a half years at Saints he made just 49 appearances for the club but is still fondly remembered.
