Southampton target Inigo Calderon signs new deal at Brighton & Hove Albion

Inigo Calderon Inigo Calderon

SAINTS have missed out on signing right back Inigo Calderon.

In a surprise U-turn, the Spaniard has put pen to paper on a new three-year deal at The Withdean after turning down a more lucrative offer from Saints.

Last month, Seagulls boss Gus Poyet had said the player had no future at Brighton after turning down a new contract offer amid interest from Alan Pardew.

Calderon today said: "I think it would have been two years with Southampton. We were still sorting out the terms.

“The money they were offering was better than Brighton. Of course, that is important, but my feelings were for Brighton."

Brighton have inserted a clause allowing them to cancel the deal after six months, should Calderon not fully recover from a hip injury he suffered in April.

Pardew is searching for a new right back after releasing Jon Otsemobor, Lloyd James, Graeme Murty and Wayne Thomas, all of whom played in that position for Saints last season

You mean the Echo plucked his name from a few messageboards weeks ago and then passed it on saying we were interested in him, when probably in fact, Saints never even approached him in the first place.
.
I saw both games against Brighton last season and he never stood out anyway. No loss.

Strikes me as being a bit of a "jolly foreigner" wantng easy money. He probably knew as does Pardew he wasn't good enough for Saints.
Watch out for an unknown African from the World Cup?

Brighton fan in peace.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this news, Calderon appeared to be on his way to you on a much better package than we could ever afford, Gus had set him a deadline to sign for us and he didn't as he was aware of the interest from the saints - so he was told he wouldn't play for Brighton again.

I think he's settled in the area and enjoys living in Brighton (although we are only 2 hours down the road from you!) and I'm surprised Gus has gone back on his "promise" that Calde would not wear the stripes again. He usually sticks by his decisions - Virgo, Forster and Cox can vouch for that.

I guess there is still some loyalty in football, even if it is after a change of heart.

No, the Brighton manager Gus Poyet said Saints were interested in him, as the story says.

Interested and offering a contract is totally different. So contacting players agents about their availability can be a long distance away from actually getting round the table with the player to discuss terms. I can not believe that Calderon would turn down more money from Saints, so it must be that Saints never actually persued their interest.
.
Therefore, the headline about Saints "missing out" is misleading.

Very pleased Brighton fan here. Inigo leaving felt like a dagger to the heart, it feels like a new signing now. Inigo you are a HERO!!!

Calderon is also clearly giving a load of flannel to appease the Brighton fans to make them think they have got him from under the noses of Saints.
.
In fact, this is a classic player/agent/media non-transfer story where everyone has spouted a load of B.S. all along.

On the contrary. It is actually news for a change.

Possibly.

We're just glad he's coming back. The amount of uproar his possible departure to Saints caused here is testament to his popularity (and ability). Happy days indeed.

He joined Brighton 3 months after our win in Southampton. No wonder he didn't stand out !!
Fantastic new for the Seagulls !
Welcome home Calde

Well Calderon himself says (again, in the story above) that Saints were offering him more money than Brighton.

Calderon today said: "I think it would have been two years with Southampton. We were still sorting out the terms.

“The money they were offering was better than Brighton. Of course, that is important, but my feelings were for Brighton."

As an outsider, I'm not an expert on the way football deals are struck, but I would guess if the player involved is saying he had been offered a two-year deal, and the money was better than he's already on, then there's a fair chance he'd been offered a contract. Therefore he has decided to go with a different option, so I would say Saints have indeed missed out on him.

Nobody has made the point that he has a hip problem. I think maybe AP
did not go "all out" to get him because of this.

calog_saint says...

My view is that our Spanish friend and/or his agent saw an opportunity for a big pay day, so turned down the Seagull's offer. Saints and, possibly others, took notice. He turns up to discuss terms etc. and then has a medical. Aforementioned hip problem comes to light and it results in no deal. Neither the player, his agent or any club is going to make any of this public. He returns to Brighton, cap in hand, and they offer him a SIX months deal. If he was sooo good and soo fit it would have been 12 months or longer. That seems, to me, to be nearer the situation.

No calog, he has signed a 3 year deal (with an option for the club to cancel if he fails to recover from an unusual hip-injury sustained in our second last game).Well you have ex-seagulls Dan Hammond and Dan Harding (both decent) and I can tell you that Calderon is a better natural footballer than either of those. We are delighted he has returned to BHA. I suspect you guys will go up next year anyway as you are putting together a really strong side. I'm just glad you won't be pinching our right-back.

Reality-man says...
6:51pm Thu 10 Jun 10

I'm probably glad we haven't signed him. No disrespect to Brighton but you have to question his ambition to turn down a higher paid contract with a team favourites for promotion to stay with Brighton?

Exactly, it was quoted on SkySports that, "...he has now signed a contract which Brighton can cancel after six months if he fails to recover from a hip injury he suffered in April."

The last thing we need is a crock who's not going to go the distance.

The Club loyalty ploy gives him a way back. <rolls eyes>

Don't waste your time trying to explain the obvious to this one Dan.

His or her choice of user name marks this person down as one to be ignored.

For me that was the MOST IMPORTANT part of the statement.
.
It is very unusual these days to have a clause in the contract to say it can be cancelled after 6 months if he does not recover.
.
It sounds to me as if we were talking to his agent about a contract very similar to Murty's one last year which was based on him being fit and available to play.

mbetts says...
10:41am Fri 11 Jun 10

Glad we never got him, good player? maybe? but with a mystery injury, it would have probably been another player who pulls up after 1 or 2 games and sits the rest of the season out.

No thanks, we'll be ok next season, and the right people are in charge to get us back to the top.

RL7 says...
11:06am Fri 11 Jun 10

He may have done a decent job for us to be honest, but you can say that about Murty last season and he was out for most of it. I dont think AP wanted to take a risk on another rb with an injury issue, especialy if he's still considering Murty, if they both suffer injuries or cant reach fitness then we are back to the situation we had last season again.
