Drivers are being advised to plan ahead as the M3 is set to close northbound this weekend.

National Highways has said motorists should leave extra time for their journeys as closures begin on Friday.

The M3 London-bound will be fully closed between 9pm on Friday and 6am on Monday.

This will take place between junction 4a for Farnborough and Fleet, and junction 3 for Bracknell and Woking.

The London bound slip road, approaching from Frimley, will also be closed at junction 4 over the weekend.

The work follows inspections earlier in the year which identified a series of maintenance issues on this section of road.

It includes the installation of an upgraded barrier, resurfacing, road markings and the removal of traffic management measures.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "While works are progressing well, weekend closures are necessary to allow contractors to complete the work.

"Road users should allow extra time to complete their journeys and follow the official diversion route, which will be fully sign-posted."

M3 London-bound diversion route for the weekend

If you are travelling on the London-bound way on the M3 from Southampton you will need to be aware of the diversion route that is in place.

The diversion route advertised on the National Highways website is as follows:

  • All vehicles should exit at M3 Junction 4a and join the A327 for approximately 1.8 miles
  • Traffic should then turn right onto the A30 and continue for approximately 7.1 miles
  • Vehicles should then turn right onto Grove End link road, turning left onto the A322, before turning left to rejoin the M3 London bound at Junction 3.

Additionally, National Highways will also be closing the London-bound slip road approaching from Frimley (the on-slip) at Junction 4 over the same weekend.

The diversion route for that is as follows:

  • All vehicles from Junction 4 should use the A331 and then turn right onto the A30 London Road.
  • After approximately 4.5 miles turn right onto the A322 and then rejoin the M3 London bound at Junction 3.
