THERE will be a chance to learn about where food comes from as scores of Hampshire farmers open their gates as part of a national event.

Organised by Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF), Open Farm Sunday on June 7 will give people the chance to talk to farmers and find out more about the journey of British food.

Now in its 10th year, the event aims to make people aware of the food British farmers produce, including a quarter of all fruit and vegetables consumed in the UK.

Research conducted for the event found that one in three children has never heard a cow 'moo' and eight in 10 people did not know that British farmers grow aubergines.

The event is designed to show people how food is grown and produced, talks to farmers and have a fantastic family day out.

There will also be the chance to find out about new technologies in the industry and see how farmers are combining modern and traditional techniques. Some of the most recent introductions include drones, robot milking machines and even driverless tractors!

Each event is different and includes activities such as farm walks, machinery displays, sheep shearing and milking demonstrations. Most of the events are free.

Taking part are: Middle Farm in Cheriton; Leckford Estate in Stockbridge; Barn Farm in Hambledon; Northdown Orchard in Basingstoke; Westlands Farm in Shedfield; Double H Nurseries in New Milton; and Down to Earth Farm in Millbrook.
