IT’S behind you’ is all you need to know if you want an Indian meal that will tantalise the tastebuds and satisfy the biggest of appetites – without giving the wallet too much of a hit.

Situated in the shadow of The Mayflower Theatre, beneath Wyndham Court, is Kisna Indian Restaurant – the perfect stop off after an evening watching a show.

Immediately made to feel at home by the friendly staff, my friends and I were soon warming up for the evening’s main dishes by tucking into a brace of pappadams each – lime pickle anyone?

Then it was onion bhajees and chicken chat – the latter a particular favourite of mine and beautifully prepared.

Mains wise, the ladies plumped for familiar favourites chicken korma and chicken tikka dansak respectively. The boys, however, in the red-hot corner, chose lamb bhoona and one of the tempting chef’s specials, murgh charga – chicken marinated in yoghurt, ginger and garlic cooked in a spicy sauce.

My dish, the latter, was, without a doubt, as good as I’ve eaten in a curry house – the moist pieces of chicken – excuse my uncouth streak – able to be broken in half by a fork and subsequently scooped up with rice and a large helping of the delicious sauce.

And judging by the way conversation went dead, it’s clear that my fellow diners were just as keen to tuck in as I was.

Of course, being a ‘big boned’ person I was only too happy to help my friends finish off their dishes, also confirming the high quality of their dishes.

As the ‘fizzy drinks’ continued to be taken from the restaurant’s fully licensed bar, I refreshed my palette with an orange sorbet – for me personally, always the perfect finish to a curry of the highest order.

And the bill?

Well, with bhajees costing £1.90 and the mains ranging from £5.50 to £7 the evening was surprisingly light on the pocket.
