Drivers warned to avoid roads when snow comes

First published in News

POLICE are warning members of the public to avoid travelling on the roads tomorrow morning with five to ten centimetres of snow predicted to fall across Hampshire.

The latest advice from the Met Office is that bulk of the snowfall is anticipated between 4am and 1pm, with the potential to seriously disrupt rush hour traffic With as much as 10cms of snow anticipated across the whole county, and four to eight centimetres on the Isle of Wight, there is potential for drifting to occur because of forecast strong winds.

Chief Inspector Gary Cooper, from Hampshire Constabulary’s Critical Incident Cadre, said: “Our advice at this stage is if you can avoid travelling on the roads tomorrow morning, please do.

“Keep journeys to only those that are absolutely necessary - at all costs we want to avoid a repeat of traffic chaos we have had during snow in previous years.

“Those that have the flexibility in their job to work from home - tomorrow would be a very good day to do so.

“Together with our partner agencies we are setting up an Adverse Weather Office based at our support headquarters at Netley, to live-time monitor the situation as it develops and manage any issues that arise caused by the snow. Our unified aim is to keep everybody safe and moving.”

Hampshire County Council gritting lorries have already started salting the roads across the county. This will continue throughout the night and crews are on standby throughout the day tomorrow.

Priority routes are main routes and A-roads, plus community access routes such as roads that lead to schools, doctors surgeries and health centres.

As a taxpayer I expect all roads to be gritted , what is the point if we can not get to a main road because side roads are not gritted that is a little bit of snow again puts us to a standstill of which the council promised they are prepared and ready for.

So how come it's -10 in Poland, they have had 15-20cm of snow, but somehow managed to clear it all up.All the traffic is flowing freely and all the schools are still open?
It's a joke, a light dusting of snow is coming and they sart scaring the bejesus out of everyone.
Any old excuse for total failure in this country, there are plenty of Poles here lets ask them how to do it.

Could it possibly be that it is an annual event in Poland, and that with decades of experience, they have learned how to deal with it?

Is it not reasonable to assume that, with those decades of experience, it has made good economic sense to buy snow ploughs and similar equipment?

If the City Council splashed out a couple of million quid on snow-clearing vehicles, and we had no snow for four or five years, I imagine that all those that are bellyaching about us not having the equipment now, would be bellyaching about the waste of council taxpayers money then.

Strange as it may seem, and contrary to popular thought, there are many places that are used to getting heavy snowfalls, but they still get caught out. The state of New York being a prime example.

You don't even need to cross the sea to be honest. I lived in Edinburgh and Glasgow for a while, and saw the heaviest snowfall of my life. Transport systems were dealt with without any fuss, and in the blink of an eye. Streets (including pavements) were clear and safe by 5am. Kids went to school, adults went to work, and life continued as normal. It's not beyond the ken of man.

Tentative one - don't shoot me down:-

If the population is really geting older, and retiring earlier, doesn't that create an ideal "temporary" labour pool. These fit-fifties and sixties could form a task force who would clear the roads and pavements, before the younger workers go out.

Additionally, the added responsibilities could help the older ones to get a bit of self-esteem and pride?

shame they could not get all the spongers out of bed to clean the streets and roads seeing as we pay for them
You bleeding heart liberals make me sick.

Those spongers don't deserve the dignity of work. We should be burning their corpses in the road to clear the snow. That's the only way their type will learn!
And it's people like you that everyone hates, not all people on benefits are people who just can't be bothered, most are out there all day everyday looking for work yet people like you and idiot employers won't give them a job, plus there's NOTHING out there to do, even mcdonalds is overwhelmed with so many applicants that they have to turn away 4/5 people, go to Africa if you want to condemn those less fortunate than you, do it here and people will rise up and retaliate.
.. satire 's wasted on you, isn't it?
Lol. Quite.
